Even just riding through rain, you won’t get as wet being showered from below as well as above and will help protect your clothing. They will also increase the longevity of your bicycle components.
What Types
Full-Length Bicycle Mud Guards
The most awkward to fit, but for road bikes, once they’re on, there are the toughest. They will give the greatest protection, especially if they include a flexible mudflap at the end.
First, you need to determine whether your bike has the eyelets required for full mudguards. You may need a clip-on set (that’s usually the case for race bikes, less likely to have mudguard eyelets). You also think about tyre width and clearance
Clip-on mudguards
If you don’t have the right eyelets or extra clearance necessary for traditional guards, don’t worry – there’s still plenty of choices. Clip-ons will fit almost any road bike and still give pretty decent coverage.
Fitting involves rubber straps, cable ties and other such quick and easy solutions, but once again that keeps any additional weight to a minimum.
Mountain Bikes
You will be thinking of one thing, not so with a road bike, mud, so guards on Mountain bikes fit high up on the seat and down tube.
Consider also a neoprene gurnard. If you have a suspension fork neoprene will stretch from the fork crown tot he arch, closing the gap that most of the mud will come through. They are very light and do a great job, also unbreakable.
If you have a suspension fork consider a neoprene guard. They stretch from the fork crown to the arch, filling the hole that 90% of the mud flies through. They’re extremely light, unbreakable and do a fantastic job. You can even make one yourself from a sliced-open inner tube and zip ties.
